Electric Guest at Schubas in Chicago April 27th 2012

I haven’t been electrified from a concert in a while. When I walked into Schubas on Friday April 27th to meet a couple of friends, I knew it would be a good show because it was sold out. Coming off of a performance at SXSW, Electric Guest embarks on their first headlining tour. They walk on stage and own it from the first note. Electric Guest vocalist, writer and co-founder Asa Taccone walked on like a giddy kid ready to jump into the songs with ambition and passion. Flitting soulfully around the stage like an entranced son of Prince, his smooth tenor and falsetto vocal commanded the room. Accompanied by bass, guitar, drums, and several keyboard synthesizers, the band skillfully wove in out of entrancing big beat electronica and throwback soul. Schubas turned half into a dance party and half into astounded onlookers. The house became theirs and everyone understood who they were and what they were about. You can’t really talk about how they affect, you have to experience it. If you get the chance to see them before they hit the bigger stages, get electrified, be their guest.

…because it’s the only thing that means anything at all
The world spins in whirlwinds and rips me apart
Hoping for the best as the days turn into nights
Running my fingers over scars tonight

Lots of stories to tell, but the silence falls
Heavy, oh heavy, in the presence of thought
Just a second to catch it just to mention that it’s present
It’s present
Hollow sorrow turns blissful tomorrow
Open windows with window sills say…
“Take a moment to yourself”
Offering solace for the unheld

A wish for the well sinking eternities deep
Each coin but a thought awakening from a deep sleep
My harmony harmlessly harking for half
Half of the balance I need to hold me here intact

Know its enough
No it’s not over…

Because I can float like a cloud of smoke
Rising from the ash
But I hold myself down with what I’ve learned from the years passed
Origins to present, history is our present
The meaning of our greatest ideas may die with us.
The meaning of our greatest ideas may die with us.

Take a moment to yourself
Know it’s not over…
Take a moment to yourself
We can start over.

Odd Czar Record Review in Illinois Entertainer

Armando Perez, operating under the moniker The Single Helix, wields his instrumental wizardry making Odd Czar (Dilligaf) an effervescent blend of trip-hop, crooked folk, and ambient bliss. “190″ is airy and anthemic, reaching for the clouds from the same launching pad as The Postal Service. For some dreamy escapes, follow the advice in “Take A Moment To Yourself” and drift away in the perfectly arranged acoustic guitar, strings, and softly harmonizing vocals, or get lost in the hazy thump-and-bump of “The Fire.” (thesinglehelix.com)
